About the Hospital
|
We are a not for profit team of dedicated professionals and volunteers passionate about saving the lives of injured wildlife.
Adelaide Koala and Wildlife Hospital officially opened in February 2014 after many months of preparation. The hospital was purpose built to help save South Australia's native wildlife. Adelaide Koala & Wildlife Hospital provides free emergency vet services to injured wildlife at our hospital in Plympton. We take in injured or orphaned wildlife with the aim of rehabilitation and release. We also participate in a wide variety of educational programs for students, carers, veterinary students and the public. We rely solely on the generosity of others including financial and in kind support and are extremely grateful to every individual that contributes to saving the lives of our native wildlife. |

Education & Awareness
We believe that knowledge and understanding is an important factor to securing the future of our wildlife. The hospital is involved with education and awareness programs for school students, carers, veterinary students and the general public. Research & Development Sustainability is key. Aside from saving the lives of our precious wildlife when they are in need, Adelaide Koala & Wildlife Hospital supports research into the medical treatments and key health factors for Koalas to help ensure their long term survival. |
Meet the Team
|
Dr Phillip Hutt - Founder and Veterinarian
Dr Phil has worked in the Adelaide Region for many years as a small animal veterinarian, but spent much of his younger years in the country working with large animals as well. He has always been a passionate advocate for animal health and has always opened his clinic doors to the wildlife of the region. With the help of Rae Campbell and many other dedicated people he opened Adelaide's first wildlife hospital. Although Dr Phil enjoys all aspects of veterinary science he particular enjoys difficult surgeries and educating people on the best way to care for their animals. |
Rae Campbell - Co-founder
Rae and her late husband Warren Campbell have been raising and rescuing native animals for over 40 years. In more recent years they became particularly dedicated to saving the Koalas of the region and has hand raised many koalas. It has always been Rae's dream to see a wildlife hospital open in Adelaide and she is thrilled to be involved. Rae has also recently been nominated for the Pride of Australia awards recognizing her contribution to conservation. She has helped raise much needed funding for the hospital and hosts many fundraising events. She also educates the community on koala facts, even hosting school groups at the hospital in our purpose built education room. |
Joanne Sloan - Operations Manager
Jo has always had a love of animals great and small and holds a Bachelors Degree in Applied Science - Planning and Management as well as an Advanced Diploma of Marketing and several other certificates. With experience in both the not for profit and corporate environments, she wanted to use her marketing, planning and business management skills to further develop AKAW Hospital. |
Volunteers and Support Staff
We are very lucky to have a dedicated group of regular volunteers who help support the staff at the clinic by cleaning cages, preparing food, educating people, helping with fundraisers and so much more. Without their help we would not have achieved what we have so far. We also are very lucky to have rotating nurses and veterinarians come and offer their expertise at the clinic as well as students from around Australia and the world interested in learning about our wildlife.
